Whether you're moving across town or across Texas, staying organized is the best way to reduce stress. Use this checklist to keep your Dallas–Fort Worth move on track from the first phone call to the final walkthrough.

    6–8 Weeks Before

    • Choose your moving date. Mid-week and mid-month dates are often easier to reserve.
    • Schedule professional movers. Quality moving companies in Dallas book up, especially during summer and month-end.
    • Begin organizing and donating unwanted items. The less you move, the simpler the day.
    • Notify your Realtor if your closing date changes. Timing shifts affect everything downstream.

    3–4 Weeks Before

    • Begin packing non-essential items. Out-of-season clothing, décor, books, and rarely used kitchen items go first.
    • Order moving supplies. Boxes, tape, paper, and markers. Consider wardrobe boxes for closets.
    • Reserve elevators if moving into a high-rise. Buildings in Uptown, Turtle Creek, and Downtown Dallas often require advance booking.
    • Transfer utilities. Electric, gas, water, internet, and trash should be active before you arrive.

    1 Week Before

    • Confirm your move. Verify the date, crew size, and arrival window with your moving company.
    • Pack valuables separately. Jewelry, documents, and small electronics should travel with you.
    • Label every box. Room and contents save hours during unloading.
    • Prepare appliances. Defrost refrigerators, disconnect washers and dryers, and secure cords.
    • Set aside essentials for your first night. Toiletries, medications, chargers, and a change of clothes.

    Moving Day

    • Walk through your home with the crew leader. Point out access issues, stairs, and fragile areas.
    • Identify fragile or specialty items. Artwork, pianos, safes, and antiques need advance handling instructions.
    • Keep medications, documents, and valuables with you. Don't pack these on the truck.
    • Complete a final walkthrough before leaving. Check closets, cabinets, garages, and storage areas.
